Standby and Portable Generators FAQ
-
What is the difference between a standby generator and a portable generator?
Standby generators and portable generators are both used to supply emergency power to a home when the main power source goes out. A standby generator is permanently installed on the outside of a home, while a portable generator is typically stored in a garage, storage shed, or basement and brought out to use when necessary.
-
What Generator size do I need?
The size of the Generator depends on what you’re looking to run during an outage as well as fuel type your appliances use. Gas powered furnaces and ranges will allow for smaller generators as they use significantly less power
-
Can a standby generator power my entire house?
Yes, depending on the size of the home and what fuel type your home appliances use. We can do a calculation to determine what would be needed to achieve this
-
How often should I maintain my generator?
Stand by Generators should be serviced every 6-12 months. For portable generators, oil changes should be done every 50-60 hours.
-
Are permits needed for stand by generators
Most jurisdictions will require a permit to be pulled an inspections to be performed. Optomax Electric will take care of all of the paperwork involved!
-
Can i use my portable generator indoors?
No, it is never safe to use a generator indoors, even with windows and doors open. Generators produce carbon monoxide, a deadly and odorless gas, which can quickly accumulate in enclosed spaces and lead to poisoning.
